About

The renter's side of renting.

In one line
Free tools that keep the renter's own record of a tenancy: when the deposit is due back, who owes what in the household, and what the unit looked like.

Almost every company that touches a renter's move is paid by the other side: listing sites, rent-payment apps and screening services earn their money from landlords and property managers. housr is built to be the opposite, a calm, specific friend who knows the law in your state and works only for you.

What housr does

  • Move out and get the deposit back. A dated plan from the day you give notice, the steps that start your landlord's clock, the deadline itself, a prorated estimate for worn items, and letters that cite your state's statute.
  • Split rent fairly. A split weighted by the rooms, not the headcount, that the whole group can see, and a household ledger built around rent.
  • Don't pay a scammer. A check on who you are paying and how, before any money leaves your account.

What is checked so far

Deposit deadlines differ in what starts the clock, which days count and what you must do first. We have checked the statute text for Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Wyoming (36 of 51 jurisdictions) on 2026-10-05. For every other state the Deposit Clock says the rule is still being checked instead of guessing a date. No rule has been signed by a named legal reviewer yet, so law pages carry a “legal review pending” stamp and are not indexed by search engines until one has.

How we label things

  • Every legal rule links to the official statute and shows the date its text was checked.
  • Calculated figures, such as a prorated Fair Charge amount, are called estimates and show how they were worked out.
  • Anything you type in is your data. Example numbers on our pages are marked as samples.
  • We don't publish testimonials, ratings, user counts or outcome statistics.

What housr is not

housr is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. It never moves money, never asks for your Social Security number or bank login, and never sends your details to a landlord. For help with your own case, contact your state's legal aid organisation or court self-help center.
